What is “Dickens in Italy”?

In July 1844, Dickens and his family travelled to Italy where, using Genoa as their main base, they would explore the country over the course of a year. The journey was recorded in personal letters from Dickens, a series of “Travelling Letters” published in the Daily News in 1846, and culminating in Dickens’ travelogue “Pictures from Italy” published in May 1846.

Now, 175 years later, this project will chart Dickens’ journey in real-time, live-tweeting with highlights from Dickens in his own words. In addition to the regular updates on twitter, there will be supplementary posts on the blog to explore various themes, locations and topics in greater depth. The journey starts in July 2019!
